![]() I find it too finicky and time consuming. ![]() I rarely add a new paper to the iPad app. Papers for Mac can sync over WiFi with Papers for iPad, allowing me to take all of my papers with me. For that I maintain a separate Bibdesk database. ![]() Papers for Mac also has bibliographic support (for things like Latex), but I find it to be more miss than hit. You can also search for and download new papers from within the app, but I prefer to use my web browser and the bookmarklet to automatically send a paper to Papers. Searching and sorting papers is easy, and the built in PDF reader is optimized for journal pages. Every paper I download immediately gets loaded into Papers. Papers strives to be the iTunes 3 of your academic collection. Along came Papers and I have never looked back. It became so hard to find a PDF in the labyrinthine maze of folders that it was quicker to just download the paper again. For years I downloaded PDFs into a hodge-podge collection of folders on my computer. Where Papers shines is when it is paired with Papers for Mac. Papers plays nice with other iPad apps too making it easy to fire over a PDF to any other app that supports PDFs on the iPad. It includes an above average PDF reader and displays important meta data like the abstract, authors, and journal. Papers is an app designed to house all of your academic papers. This is due in large part to the following three apps. It has been a long time since I have carried a book or stack of papers around with me. The iPad is an excellent device for reading (as long as you are not in direct sun light). So far, the app can look up the repos you’re watching and your own, forked repos, and the latest commits from a given repo. Hubroid is an Android app for keeping track of what’s happening on GitHub while you’re not hooked to your computer. I’m just waiting for the first person to combine this with the jQuery Konami Code. On the more practical side, this could be a great example of how easy it is to make a jQuery plugin. There’s a live demo if you want to see it in action. Set up your fortune cookies with JSON, hook it to an HTML element, and you’re all set. Jquery.fortune is a replacement for Unix’s fortune in jQuery. The data’s also not trapped on your own machine, you can hook it up to Simplenote, or to anywhere via WriteRoom or Dropbox. If it can’t find a note with you’re starting to type, and a new one is instantly created and saved. It approaches this simple task in a mouseless, modeless way, and user interaction is driven through incremental search. ( ), or Notational Velocity, is an OSX desktop app that does just that: note taking. GitHub’s languages section already recognizes CoffeeScript, so get hacking! Notably New Projects Some projects are already cropping up, including rack-coffee and even a rewrite of underscore.js. The list goes on and on, and for executable examples along with their compiled-to-JavaScript equivalents, check out the docs. CoffeeScript offers a terse syntax inspired by Ruby and Python, list comprehensions, existential operators to remove pesky checks, and a reliable inheritance model to boot. This is a fantastic DSL that compiles down to executable JS and adds plenty of awesome features along the way. Just please have a README so you can show others (and me!) how to setup/use your project.Ĭoffee-script is what HAML and SASS are to HTML and CSS, just for JavaScript.
